From an historical castle...

This building was built on the foundations of an older castle dating from the 12th century on the hillside of Montchevreuil, probably by Guillaume de Mornay or by his son, Pierre de Mornay, who received a donation on December 11, 1539 from Jean Chenu the land of Montchevreuil. In the 17th century, other building were added to the castle and stables built. The interior was remodeled in the 19th century by Jules de Mornay, Marquis de Montchevreuil.

Illustrious figures such as Madame de Maintenon, the family of Mornay or Marshal Soult have left their mark.

Madame de Maintenon wanted Montchevreuil for one of her three witnesses to her marriage to the King. Dangeau reported that Henri de Mornay, Marquis de Montchevreuil, was so esteemed at court that Louis XIV had said of him : If I were not Bourbon, I would like to be a Montchevreuil.

The motto of the Mornay family, inscribed on the main chimney of the castle, describes well this family of knights: ARTE ET MARTE (by talent and fight)

The park with its varied and delicious sites covers 850 acre and is surrounded by 7 kilometres of walls built under Napoleon III. This work was part of the official work in order to reduce the unemployment of this period.
